A guest message for your church

Where is your weight?

One story-driven message on the oldest, simplest picture of faith in Scripture: a child falling asleep in her father’s arms.

It sends people home knowing what “believe” meant to the people who first heard it, and why that changes how we stand on Jesus this week.

The message

  • 20–25 minutes
  • Story-led
  • Any Sunday or midweek

I fell through a roof. I walked the line of screws like everyone does, and the joist underneath wasn’t there. That fall started a question I couldn’t put down: what are we actually standing on?

The New Testament’s word for “believe,” pistis, was an everyday word. Soldiers used it of a commander they would follow into battle. It meant putting your full weight on someone. This message gives that picture back to your people.

  1. The roof. We all stand on something, and we rarely check it until it gives way.
  2. Amen. Not a full stop at the end of a prayer. It means “I’m standing on that.”
  3. Daddy holds. My daughters falling asleep on my chest: batach, aman, and Abraham under the stars.
  4. Mustard seed faith. Jesus didn’t ask for more faith. He asked where it was planted.
  5. It is well. My own darkest season, and the Foundation that held.

The tone is warm and encouraging. It closes with a gentle invitation to put your weight on Jesus, and it fits both Pentecostal and traditional services.

About Matthew

View from the broadcast desk at a Christian conference in a full arena
Most of my church life has been spent on this side of the stage.

Since I was 16 I’ve served as a worship leader, music director and worship pastor in local churches, at conferences and in stadiums. At Hillsong Church I ran much of the television department and crew, including the largest church gatherings in modern Australian history. I know how a Sunday runs, and I know how to serve one.

These days I’m a farmer and a dad to two young daughters, who taught me more about faith than any lexicon. The Weight of God is my first book.

Would this serve your people?

If yes, tell me about your church, a few possible dates, and what your Sunday looks like.

Want to read the book first? I’ll post a free copy to any pastor or church leader. Request a free copy →

What can I help with?

I read every request myself and reply by email.
